Hiro on the power of knowing when to move — and when not to

Progress is often associated with action. Taking the next step. Moving faster. Doing more.

But sometimes, the best way to keep moving toward a dream is to stop, reflect and make sure you are ready for what comes next.

In this edition of Dreamers in Focus, we speak with Hiro, whose journey has taken him across football, coaching, entrepreneurship and FX trading.

Through those experiences, he has developed a philosophy he calls a “strategy not to lose” — an approach focused not only on winning, but on staying in the game long enough to keep challenging yourself.

To win, first learn how not to lose

Hiro’s approach began on the football field.

As a coach, his goal was always to win. But when building a strategy, he would start by asking a different question: how do we avoid losing?

“Of course, we play to win. But when I build a strategy, I start by thinking about how not to lose.”

For Hiro, that does not mean avoiding risk or failure. It means understanding the situation, reducing the chance of a major setback, and making sure there is always an opportunity to respond and try again.

After a match, he would look beyond the final score — analysing positioning, movement and the reasons behind each outcome.

That same mindset later became central to the way he approached FX trading.

Turn setbacks into something you can learn from

Hiro began trading FX around 20 years ago.

At first, he struggled to understand the market and often felt as though prices moved against him as soon as he entered a trade. Without anyone around to teach him, he had to find his own way forward.

What kept him going was curiosity.

“I like analysing things. Whether something goes well or badly, there is always a reason. I enjoy finding that reason and working out how to improve.”

Rather than simply moving on from a loss, Hiro wanted to understand why it happened.

Over time, he learned to look not only at the market, but also at his own decisions and emotions.

That is something he now encourages others to do as well: understand why you made a decision, recognise your own patterns, and make sure one mistake does not take away your ability to try again.

Sometimes, not acting is part of the challenge

When people think about pursuing a dream, the focus is usually on what to do next.

Hiro also thinks about what not to do.

“People think a lot about moving forward, but not so much about when to stop.”

If the conditions are not right, he does not act. If emotions are clouding the decision, he waits.

“We often think that doing something will bring us closer to our dreams. But sometimes, choosing not to do something can get us there faster.”

He calls this “the challenge of not acting.”

For Hiro, progress is not always about pushing forward. Sometimes it is about pausing, reassessing and choosing the right moment to take the next step.

What does Dream Beyond Borders mean to Hiro?

“Stepping out of the comfort zone you are in now and moving into the next one.”

Hiro’s journey has been shaped by many changes in direction, new environments and new challenges.

What connects them is not constant forward movement, but the ability to make the right choice for the moment — whether that means moving ahead, learning from a setback or choosing to wait.

Because sometimes, the strongest next step is the one that makes sure you can keep going.
