Why Risk Management Matters
You can’t control what the market does next, but you can decide how much to risk, when to get out and how to manage a winning trade. Getting the market direction right is only part of trading well.
You can be right about the direction and still lose money if your position is too large or your timing is off. You can also have several losing trades and still come out ahead by keeping losses small and letting winners run.
The hard part is sticking to that approach when emotions take over. Fear can make you close a winning trade too soon. Frustration after a loss can tempt you to take a bigger position to win it back. Having a plan before you enter a trade makes those moments easier to handle.
The interactive lesson below explains how to plan your risk, manage profits and judge your progress over a series of trades.
Plan Your Stops, Targets and Position Size
Before entering a trade, decide where to cut your loss and take profit. Place your stop where your trade idea no longer holds and choose a realistic target based on market conditions.
Calculate your position size using the distance to your stop and how much you’re willing to lose. A wider stop means a smaller position, though slippage can still make the loss larger than planned. Once you’re in, avoid changing your exits simply because you feel nervous.
Set Daily and Weekly Loss Limits
Several losses can tempt you to take bigger positions or trades you’d normally avoid. Set daily and weekly loss limits in advance, and stop trading for that period if you reach one.
Use the break to review what happened instead of raising your limit to win the money back. There will be other opportunities, so you don’t need to recover every loss today.
Think Beyond the Next Trade
One win or loss tells you little about your strategy. Judge your results over a series of trades, including costs and losing streaks, and look at your average win and loss alongside your win rate.
Check whether you followed your plan and controlled your position size. Keeping risk manageable helps you stay consistent without feeling that every trade has to win.
