The US midterm elections take place on Tuesday, 3 November 2026. Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress—the House of Representatives and the Senate—and Trump is also a Republican. The election will decide whether his party keeps those majorities or Democrats take control of one or both chambers.
For FX and CFD traders, the key is how the result affects government spending, US interest rates, the dollar, stocks and gold. Traders can prepare for different outcomes and watch how markets respond.
What are the two chambers of Congress?
Congress makes US laws and has two chambers:
- House of Representatives: 435 voting members representing local districts. Members serve two-year terms, and all seats are elected at every midterm.
- Senate: 100 senators, two per state. Senators serve six-year terms, with about one-third of seats elected every two years, plus any special elections.
Both chambers must pass the same bill before it goes to the president. Winning either chamber allows a party to block legislation. Trump is not up for election. The next presidential election is in 2028. The new Congress takes office on 3 January 2027.
Why does the result matter?
Congress has two parts: the House and the Senate. Both must approve new tax and spending laws. If Republicans keep control of both, Trump’s plans could pass more easily. If Democrats win either one, he would need their support. Even then, Republicans may disagree with each other, and Trump can reject bills passed by Democrats.
When will we know the results?
The first polls close in parts of Indiana and Kentucky at 6:00 pm Eastern Time on 3 November—7:00 am in Japan on 4 November. More results will arrive throughout the Japanese morning.
A clear victory could allow news organisations to announce likely winners during election night. If important races are close, control of Congress may remain uncertain for days or longer.
What results are expected?
Polymarket is a prediction market where people bet on future events. The odds quoted on 27 October 2026 give Democrats:
- Senate: 65% chance of winning control.
- House: 92% chance of winning control.
Democrats are favoured in both, especially the House. Republicans keeping both chambers would be a bigger surprise and could cause a stronger market reaction.
Scenario 1 — Democrats win both chambers
If Democrats win the House and Senate, Trump could find it harder to pass new spending plans or tax cuts. Investors may expect less support for growth, which could push US bond yields and the dollar lower.
But government debt would not fall simply because Democrats won. Arguments over spending could also unsettle markets.
- USD/JPY: Could fall if lower US yields make the dollar less attractive.
- EUR/USD: Could rise as the dollar weakens.
- Gold: Could benefit from a weaker dollar and lower yields.
- US stock indices: Lower yields could help, especially the Nasdaq. But concerns about slower growth and weaker profits could weigh on stocks.
Watch whether US yields and the dollar fall together. If they do, traders could look to buy EUR/USD or sell USD/JPY after a pullback, rather than chase the first move.
Scenario 2 — Democrats win the House, Republicans keep the Senate
With Congress split, both parties would need to compromise on new tax and spending laws. Major changes could become harder to pass.
If the result is close to what investors expected, the first market move may fade. Attention could quickly return to economic data and interest rates.
- USD/JPY: Could stay within its recent range if US yields barely change.
- EUR/USD: Early gains or losses could fade without a change in interest-rate expectations.
- Gold: Could return to following the dollar and yields.
- US stock indices: Could rise as uncertainty clears, but earnings and borrowing costs would still matter.
If a sharp move fails and prices return to their earlier range, traders could consider trading back towards the middle of that range. Wait for the move to fail first—an expected result can still produce a strong trend.
Scenario 3 — Republicans keep both chambers
A Republican win could make it easier for Trump to pass his plans. Hopes for lower taxes, more spending and stronger business profits could help stocks and the dollar at first.
The question is how much those plans would cost.

The payments could lift consumer spending. But more government borrowing could push bond yields higher and add to inflation concerns. That would also raise borrowing costs for businesses and households.
- USD/JPY: Could rise if US yields and the dollar strengthen together.
- EUR/USD: Could fall as higher US yields attract buyers to the dollar.
- Gold: Could fall if the dollar and yields rise, although debt concerns could support buying.
- US stock indices: Stronger spending could help profits, but sharply higher yields could hurt stocks, especially the Nasdaq.
If yields and the dollar rise together, traders could look to buy USD/JPY or sell EUR/USD after a pullback. If yields rise while the dollar falls, the market may be more worried about government debt. That would weaken the case for buying dollars.
Scenario 4 — Results remain unclear
A close count could leave control of Congress undecided for days. Prices may jump on one result, then reverse when another race is announced.
- USD/JPY: Could swing as yields move and investors buy or sell the yen.
- EUR/USD: Could change direction repeatedly as expectations shift.
- Gold: Could attract buyers looking for safety, though dollar strength could hold it back.
- US stock indices: Could fall during the uncertainty and recover when the result becomes clearer.
These swings may offer chances to trade against a large short-term move. For example, if a sharp rise stalls and price falls back below a level it just broke, traders could look for a move towards earlier prices.
Keep positions small and set a clear stop-loss. A fresh result could restart the move, so avoid buying or selling just because the price looks unusually low or high.
Be ready for opportunities
The midterms could bring big moves in currencies, gold and stocks. Preparing for different results can help you spot opportunities as they develop.
If a clear trend forms, look for a pullback before entering. If a sharp move stalls and starts to reverse, there may be a chance to trade back towards earlier prices. Keep trades small and have a clear exit plan.
Prepare for different outcomes and be ready to act when the market supports your idea. Stay patient and wait for a clear opportunity.
